This past week, CBC Television and Radio One made some changes in regards to their news programming. One of the largest changes, for me, was a new-format CBC Radio Overnight. For several years this has helped put me to sleep (in a good way); and I enjoyed listening to programming from a good variety of public broadcasters worldwide — which was the point of Overnight when it started in 1995.
Now? I can pick out only three two countries represented — Australia, the UK (BBC World Service) and Canada itself (programming from Radio Canada International — two hours’ worth, not to mention Radio One reruns!).
While I can still get to sleep, this isn’t exactly the variety I and other listeners have enjoyed over the years.
Over the years, these are the countries I can think of that have been represented, aside from Australia and the UK: Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Korea, Sweden, The Netherlands, South Africa. There may’ve been other countries featured in the past, but the ones I’ve listed are the ones I can remember.
Seriously, CBC? You can do better! You have done better! Fix Overnight, please!
